The 18 Gallon Brewery

The Grain Mill Cupboard

The Valley mill is powered by the rather beefy looking motor which came off an old wood lathe. It's now in its own cupboard to help reduce the amount of grain dust floating about.

   The Hot Liquor Tank (HLT)

The HLT is the same one as was used before, a 60 litre plastic bucket. It just needs to be topped up before the sparge. You can just see the Temperature Controller underneath.

 The Mash Tun

The mash tun is the old boiler. A converted 50 litre sankey. It's insulated by the CFC being wrapped round it providing a surprisingly efficient water jacket. All the pipes and valves mean I can recirculate the mash to clear it nicely before pumping it into the boiler.

Inside the Mash Tun

The false bottom and pick up pipe in the mash tun. No stuck mashes so far!!

The Boiler

The new boiler is a converted 100 litre sankey keg. The burner is still the Bullfinch propane powered one.

Inside the Boiler

The original idea was to make a false bottom for the boiler like the one in the mash tun. As a temporary stop gap an old stainless steel filter from an industrial dishwasher was used and works brilliantly so it may become permanent.

.

Inside of the Fermenter.

The fermenter is an 18 gallon Kilderkin (82 litres) The copper coil is an immersion chiller and on the other end of the black box is a stainless steel tube with the temperature sensor in the end.
